Lieux de mémoire

At the centre of the ‘Lieux de Mémoire’ collection we find designer Griet’s visual memories. Each strongly connected to a specific location.

She designed the collection using satellite pictures of these landscapes: a patch of forest with its jagged edge, or the uniform geometrical structure of tilled farmlands.

23rd of September 1987, 15th of May 1991 & 3rd of June 2017

The names of the scarves refer to the moment in time the memory was created in that specific location. The designs unconsciously recall existing and archaic patterns. Conjured from collective memory, such as tartans or warm woollen blankets.

4th of September 1990 & 6th of October 2018

16th of July 2014

Griet revisited these places during a nostalgic roadtrip with her sister, photographer Bieke Depoorter.

They draped the scarves upon the landscape that inspired them, or invited passers-by to be their impromptu models.

Old memories were brought to life again, while new ones came into being.

In December 2020 and January 2021 we added five new colour combinations to our collection, as well as our first • wolvis garment: a kimono.

The kimono is a refined quality piece, knitted in delicate jacquard with a silk finishing around the collar and sleeve. It has the same dessin as the scarves of the ‘Lieux de Mémoire’ collection and is inspired by that 100-year-old kimono Griet bought in New-York. Details were translated, such as the back seam and sleeve insert, to a new garment. A collar of pure silk was added, as well as an accent in coral red around one cuff.
